As a traveler from Europe, I have always been drawn to the vibrant and diverse culture of Puerto Rico. From its stunning beaches to its rich history, this Caribbean island has always been on my bucket list. And one of the must-visit places in Puerto Rico is the breathtaking El Yunque National Forest.
Located in the northeastern part of the island, El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System. As soon as I entered the forest, I was greeted by the soothing sound of waterfalls and the sweet melodies of the coqui, a tiny frog native to Puerto Rico.
The forest is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, making it a paradise for nature lovers. I was in awe of the lush greenery and vibrant flowers that surrounded me. The trails in the forest are well-maintained and offer both easy and challenging hikes for all levels.
One of the highlights of my visit was the breathtaking view from the Yokahu Observation Tower. From the top, I could see the forest stretching out as far as the eye could see, with the ocean in the background. It was truly a sight to behold.
After exploring the forest, I took a dip in the crystal-clear waters of La Mina Falls, a popular swimming spot in El Yunque. The refreshing water was the perfect way to cool off after a day of hiking.
In addition to its natural beauty, El Yunque also holds cultural significance for the people of Puerto Rico. It is believed to be the home of the god Yúcahu and is a sacred place for the Taíno people.
Visiting El Yunque National Forest was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to immerse myself in the natural wonders of Puerto Rico. I highly recommend adding it to your travel itinerary when you visit this beautiful island.
